Conclusion

Our design meets the needs of the patients and physical therapists who will be using the device.

The design uses these components to do so:

  • Adjustable barrier height for users of different builds

  • L-shape aluminum frame that creates the barrier in between the patient’s legs

  • Crossbar that secures the device from swinging with the walker

Patients who have experienced a stroke or traumatic brain trauma may develop a scissoring gait. These patients need a device that will assist them in physical therapy to regain their ability to walk independently. The Scissor Stopper meets these needs by consisting of lightweight and accessible components. The Scissor Stopper will decrease scissoring and cue patients to take wider steps.

Physical therapists want a device that can help ease the therapeutic process while being affordable and convenient for their facility. The inexpensive and simple design of our device achieves this by providing adjustability options to work in a variety of scenarios and on a variety of patients. Additionally, the Scissor Stopper allows the patient to put his/her weight on the walker and device, lessening the strain on the aiding physical therapist.
